In order to totally secure your data in case of data loss due to hardware failure, you need to make regular backups. Making multiple backups and storing them in different places ensures that you can recover your data easily.
When you make a backup of your important data by creating a disk image through the use of DataNumen Disk Image, you need to store that disk image in a safe place. Even if you don’t create a disk image and just back up important files and folders using DataNumen Backup, you would be wise to make multiple copies and store them in different places.
In this post, were going to look at the different ways that you can store your backups.
1. On the cloud
Subscribing to a good cloud service, such as iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox, provides you with a safe space to store your data. One really big advantage to storing your backups on the cloud is that it allows you to easily access your data, no matter where you are. All you need is access to the internet and your account name and password.
Take note that, while signing up for a Cloud storage service is usually free, the amount of storage space available to you on a free account is limited. You might eventually have to pay for more storage.
2. On an external hard drive
External hard drives are a good place to store your backups. It is easy to use and portable. As long as you have your external hard drive with you, you can connect it to a computer and access your backups from that machine. That also makes it easy to use if you want to use the backup to restore your hard drive on a new device.
One disadvantage to an external hard drive is, it’s still a hard drive. It can be damaged or corrupted, in that case, you will lose you backups.
3. By burning a CD/DVD/Blue Ray Disk
The advantages and disadvantages of this method of storing your backups is similar to that of an external hard drive. It is portable, but it can also be damaged or lost. They also have less storage space so if you want to use disks to store your hard drive, depending on the size of the backup files, you might not be able to store everything in just one disk.
Also, CD’s and DVDs are technologies that are becoming obsolete. Many modern laptops and computers no longer have drives that can read CDs.
4. Using a USB flash drive
A USB flash drive is even more portable than an external hard drive. It is compatible with a wide range of technologies and comes in a variety of storage sizes. The disadvantage of a USB flash drive, however, is they can be easy to lose or misplace. They are also subject to physical damage and hardware failure.
How should I store my backups?
You should probably have more than one copy of your backup files and store each copy using a different storage method. We recommend that you have one backup on the cloud and maybe another in a more portable device.
